Questions Kids Ask

CharlesKids love to ask questions and some questions are asked more than others. Here's some answers to the ones I get the most. If I'll be at your school, hopefully you'll have some new ones for me.

What's your favorite book?

I get asked this question the most. Since my books are like my kids, I like them all equally. I will say that my first book, Rimshots, will always be special since it was my first.

Where are you from?

I'm originally from California. I was born in Gardena, lived in Carson, went to elementary and junior high in Compton and high school in Duarte.

Where do you live?

I live in Poughkeepsie, New York. It's one-and-a half hours northeast of New York City.

How do you come up with so many book ideas?

I have lots of interests, and as a writer and photographer I am always exploring ways to do books on things I enjoy. Many of my interests come from reading on subjects I've always been curious about: sports, travel, history, biographies, history, animals, art, music, and on and on and on.

Who's you favorite basketball team? Baseball team?

For basketball, the LA Lakers (since I'm from LA), and for baseball, the NY Yankees.

Which do you like better, taking pictures or writing poems and stories?

Honestly, I enjoy both equally. They both present challenges and they are both fun to do. I will say that weather plays a part in which I enjoy more. For instance, when it's nice weather outside, I'd rather be taking pictures than stuck inside. But if it's terrible weather outside, I'd rather be someplace warm, writing.

Was there anyone in particular who inspired you to write or take pictures?
My poem Inspirations can best answer that question. Click here to hear the poem Inspirations.

How big is your head? (a kindergartner asked this recently so I had to add it)

My head is just big enough for my ears.
